Ceres Christian Church was started in the year 1908 when a small group of Christians began meeting in the home of Charles Edison on Fourth Street in Ceres. The church family immediately began to grow and they soon needed a bigger building. A wonderful Christian woman named Nancy Conner not only donated the lot she owned on the corner of North and Fourth Streets, but also put up the first love offering of $1000.00 to begin construction on the new building. Construction started in the fall of 1908 and was completed by spring of 1909. Nancy's generosity continued long after her death as she willed her home to the church which was another tremendous boost to the financial needs of the church.
The church continued to grow and by 1921 they purchased a lot next to their building and built some Sunday School class rooms. The depression was very difficult on the church family but because of faithful stewards the church survived and found themselves once again outgrowing their facilities in the early 1940s. Because of the vision of Fred Salter, the church family purchased three lots from the city of Ceres on the corner of Third and Magnolia. Because the price to hire a construction crew was too high, the church decided to take the challenge of building a newer and larger building themselves. The late Bob Jessup directed the building project, in which over 7,000 man hours were donated.
The Church continued to grow and peaked on Easter of 1950. In 1978 the church purchased one more lot next to the building and constructed a 9,000 square foot, two-story Sunday School wing.
In 1991, under the new pastor, Rob Hidahl, the Lord began to add more people and the church again experienced growth to such a degree that they began to hunt for land in order to build yet another new building. On Christmas Eve, 1995, a Mr. Donald McKim attended the candlelight service at Ceres Christian Church. The church was full and it prompted him to offer to sell 16.5 acres of land that he owned to CCC. After much prayer the church decided to purchase the land at only $15,000.00 an acre. This was the first miracle connected to the church's relocation to Roeding Road.
In 1998 the Church sent a letter to City Hall offering to sell the downtown church property to the City of Ceres. The city was immediately interested and early in 2001 they bought the church building for one million dollars! The city also, among other things, extended water and sewer lines down Roeding Road close to a third of a mile and the church hooked up to the city water and sewer at no charge. The City of Ceres allowed the church to stay in the downtown building for 18 months rent free while the new building was being built. Construction began on a new 24,400 square foot worship center and on September 7, 2003 Ceres Christian Church moved into their new facilities.
The Church family broke ground on the new 12,800 square foot Youth Center in 2005 and completed it in 2007. Ceres Christian Church has received many generous gifts of faith from God's children along the way.
In 2009 God blessed Ceres Christian Church with a new pastor, Adam Miller, who has already brought a richness and a fresh new approach to ministry. The Church is looking forward to what God is going to do as Adam and the staff help equip this next generation for the spiritual challenges of the 21st century.
